WHISPER

Energy transition in the maritime transport sector

Coordinator :

Verkís

Duration :

4 years

Launch date :

January 2023

Budget :

€9,2 million

Goal

The objective of the WHISPER project is to develop a fully modular solution for retrofitting ships, including a wind-solar hybrid system to significantly reduce emissions from auxiliary engines and a system of rigid tilting wings to provide wind-assisted propulsion, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions from the main engine.

CANOE’s technical activities will last 2 years and consist of :
– Develop and manufacture 4 horizontal composite wind turbine blades.
– Developing a glaciophobic coating for the wind turbine blades, to prevent them from freezing when sailing in very cold seas.

WHISPER

The European WHISPER project, funded by Horizon Europe, is an energy transition project aimed at significantly reducing emissions from the long-distance shipping industry, which is responsible for around 2.5% of total CO2 emissions worldwide, by decarbonising ships, combining a hybrid wind-solar power system and a rigid tilting wing.

The consortium, made up of 13 partners from 6 different countries, is diverse and packed with experts, and plans to develop a solution that will deliver fuel savings of around 30% on a modernised bulk carrier and up to 15% on a modernised container ship.
